The Kolkata-based Gibraltar Airsprings India Private Ltd. has announced plans to set up a facility for manufacturing air springs in India. The new plant, to come up in West Bengal, will start commercial production in the next 12 months, according to Mr. Pranob Kumar Guha, Managing Director of Gibraltar Airsprings.
Gibraltar launched its own brand of air springs 2.5 years back and has today established a very strong presence in the aftermarket. “We have already made trial supplies to a few major OEMs and bus body builders, and we expect to make a breakthrough soon”, says Mr. Guha.
Mr. Guha, who has been instrumental in introducing air springs in India decades ago, has years of experience in selling air springs. “Our experience in selling air springs, combined with the understanding of the Indian market and our customer requirements, has motivated us to take the next logical step of setting up a manufacturing facility”, he adds.
Gibraltar will be the first Indian company to indigenously manufacture air springs. It is also targeting the export market. It has been receiving plenty of overseas enquiries market, and “through our manufacturing facility we will start supplying to these markets as well; however, the initial focus will be on the domestic market”, says Mr. Guha.
The company currently offers a complete range of air springs for Indian buses. It has also developed air springs for truck and trailer application. Another interesting area of focus for the company is air springs for driver seats, particularly for buses and trucks. The company is already in discussion with seat manufacturers.
Gibraltar Airsprings has been approved by CIRT. As a result, many of the STUs, including APSRTC, BEST, TNSTC and others, have been regularly using the company air springs. The company has also established a very strong presence in the aftermarket across India.
