Mansons bets big on trailer suspension air springs

Mansons has been a name to reckon in truck and trailer parts, not just in the Indian domestic market but globally as well.

I met Mr. Gautam Khandhuja, the flamboyant CEO of the Mansons Group, and he says, “Mansons is making a big push on trailer suspension. We are working closely with all major OEMs on their FBV (fully built vehicle) programs”.

The Mansons Group consists of three major verticals – suspension, rubber to metal components and the truck and trailer component business which is primarily for the international market. Mr. Gautam has prepared a road map for each of these three verticals.

For the Suspension Division which is primarily for trailers, the company is targeting to put 4,000 units on road in 2010-11 compared to 2,400 units last year. Another interesting product offering is the suspension for lift axles. This is catching up very fast, and most of the truck manufacturers are offering lift axle on their 8X2 and 8X4 models. Mansons is working with a few OEMs for this product. For lift axle suspension and air suspension for trucks and trailers, Mansons is working with the globally renowned brand of Watson and Chalin.

Mr. Gautam says: “Air suspension on trailer is catching up and we are installing 20 units every month. Our order books are full till next April for air suspensions. The market size for trailers in India is around 25,000 units out of which even a 2 to 3% starts using air suspension, we are then talking of big numbers and going forward we expect these numbers to increase”.

Air suspension as a technology is both road and cargo-friendly, with reduced vibrations and minimal wear and tear on the trailer and axles. We want to be a key player in the trailer industry,” says Gautam. The next major verticals, which is Mansons’ forte, is rubber-metal components for trucks and trailers. The company manufactures rubber related suspension, steering, damping, drive and vibrational isolation components for trucks, trailers, tractor and general engineering industry.
Mansons International is the division which has given global recognition for the Mansons Group. The International Division, which is primarily a trading division for heavy duty truck and trailer parts for the aftermarket, is further expanding its global distribution network.

Mr. Gautam says: “The key to our success in the international market has been the stock availability. We carry very large inventories and we continue to expand on this which allows better leads times.

Mansons started off as an after market company and even today more than 70 per cent of the turnover comes from the aftermarket. The company is focused on servicing our distributors and its commitment to the aftermarket remains strong.

Mansons has six manufacturing facilities. All the units are TS certified. The company is in the process of setting up a plant for machined component. The new unit will start commercial production in the next six months and will initially cater to the captive requirement and later to other OEM requirements as well.
With its strengths in manufacturing and distribution and its strong focus on truck and trailer parts and suspension, Mansons is all set to take advantage of the opportunity both in the Indian domestic and global markets.

York to set up new trailer axle manufacturing facility

York Transport Equipment (Asia) Pte Ltd., Singapore, one of the largest manufacturers of trailer axles in the Asia Pacific region, and a subsidiary of TRF Ltd., TATA enterprise, has announced the launch of its new range of products for the Indian market. This product range includes 8021 heavy duty axle, short axle for hydraulic trailers, DN bogie suspension and air suspension.

Mr. P.V. Balasubramaniam, Director & CEO of York Group, Singapore, said: “The Indian transport industry has not yet been exposed to the range of axles and suspensions available globally for efficient transportation of goods on trailers. The industry is emerging well now out of the twelve months of recession. The trailer industry is witnessing a tremendous growth, and some of the customers who have seen or aware of York’s range of products have been demanding special products for movement of ODC as well as for off-road mining sectors. They have also shown great interest in York’s air suspensions”.

Presently York has a capacity to manufacture 24,000 axles per annum in India. The company is now busy expanding its capacity by three times, going up to 100,000 axles per annum. India, in the next three years, would be the largest facility for York and some of its products could be exported to its other markets. York is investing $10 million on this new facility and is also planning to set up an R&D, engineering and testing facility as part of the new manufacturing facility.

York Transport Equipment (Asia) is part of the York Group of companies headquartered now in Singapore. The group traces its origin to York Trailers, UK, which then was one of the largest and reputed manufacturers of trailers and axles in Europe.

York’s presence in Asia Pacific started in 1985 when York Australia was set up in Melbourne to gain a foothold in Australia for axles and suspensions for trailer applications. It also acquired Macteco, an Australian mechanical suspension manufacturer. Later in 1989, York Transport Equipment (Asia) was set up in Singapore to expand its base in the fast growing Asia Pacific region.

Since October 1, 2007, York is part of the Tata Group, since TRF Ltd., a Tata enterprise, acquired majority share-holding in the company. After acquisition by the Tata Group, York has strengthened its Engineering and Design Centre for product improvements as well as new products development.

York specialises in design, manufacture and supply of axles, suspensions and other components for trailer applications. The product range covers axles from 12T to 17.5T in square as well as round beams, mechanical suspensions, air suspensions, landing legs, couplers, wheel rims, etc. York facilities are ISO 9001 certified.
York products are certified to various EEC standards and have compliance approvals with Australian Design Rules (ADR). York was awarded the first road-friendly suspension certificate for the new year regulations in Australia.

The new products launched in the Indian market would cater to mining, port, off-road and ODC cargo operators to carry heavier loads. The air suspensions are specially designed for fleets transporting oil and gas, petroleum products, industrial gases, fragile goods, and pharmaceutical goods. Demand for these products is increasing with the growing awareness of fleet operators to use reliable, maintenance free and more appropriate products for various applications.
York has now set up warehouses in Jamshedpur, which is in operation, and another one in Panvel, Mumbai, which will start functioning by February 2010. York is also setting up its service network and spare parts network across the country. A training centre will also be set up in Panvel for training of mechanics on servicing of York products.

“We are working closely with the fleet operators who transport special cargoes and offer them most suitable solutions. We would also address to their service need by training as well as doing service campaigns at their workshops”, Mr. Balasubramaniam said.
“Demand in India for trailer axles is increasing exponentially. In the period between 2003-08, the Tractor Trailer segment grew by 50 to 55% CAGR. As per our projections, the trailer market in India will reach volumes of 65 to 70,000 units per annum by 2013-14 from the current levels of 22 to 25,000 units. On an average of 3 axles per trailer, there is requirement for 200,000 trailers by 2013. York we believe will have atleast 50% of the marketshare, hence the capacity which we are creating will be sufficient for the next 3 to 4 years”, he added.

JOST offers complete range of truck and trailer components

JOST India Auto Component, a subsidiary of the global market leader for truck & trailer coupling technology, showcased the JOST, Tridec and Rockinger brands at Auto Expo 2010. JOST exhibited its robust, user-friendly fifth wheel couplings, telescopic landing gears, trailer axle steering and towing hitches.

The JOST Group, headquartered at Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt am Main in Germany, is an enterprise which was founded in 1952 as a factory for ball bearing turntables. More than 50 years later JOST has achieved a leading position worldwide in the manufacture of components for commercial vehicles. Its products are amongst the most frequently used components in the truck & trailer segment today. Convinced by the excellence of its products, all the major manufacturers place their trust in JOST.

JOST has a tradition of success based on flexibility, technical know-how, entrepreneurial action and a close relationship with its employees. As the expectations of end users and vehicle manufacturers for supplier performance in terms of defect-free, reasonably priced products and services worldwide become increasingly demanding it is absolutely essential that the products and services offered are of high quality and reliability in order to maintain the competitiveness and a high brand recall.

In India

Since July 2008, JOST India has been in production at its own factory in Jamshedpur, on a 60,000 m2 site. The factory is located in close proximity to the largest Indian truck manufacturer, Tata Motors. In modern manufacturing facilities and assembly lines, the employees produce JOST fifth wheel couplings for the Indian market. JOST sets the same standards here as in all of its other global production sites. These standards involve not only quality, but also job safety and environmental protection.

As a result, JOST has been one of the first suppliers in India to set up a state-of-the-art plant for e-coating (EPD). This surface coating process, which is used to protect JOST products durably and reliably against corrosion, is completely free of any solvents and therefore particularly friendly to your health and the environment.

The process is currently considered the highest standard for reliable protection against corrosion in the automotive industry. In addition to coating its own products in Jamshedpur, JOST also acts as a service provider. Other companies from all over India can have their metal parts coated in the EPD bath.

Auto Expo visitors to learnt about the mode of action and advantages of this state-of-the-art coating process at the stand.

JOST India has been able to build a good brand image in the market with its pro-active approach in the OE, aftermarket and service segments. Today, all the Tata trucks are equipped with the JOST 20T and 28T couplings. A new 28T fabricated coupling has been developed as a platform product keeping the Indian price sensitive preference in mind.

Having said that, the design has been made robust enough to withstand the tough road conditions and overloading tendencies prevailing in these conditions. JOST India is quite upbeat about the fact that more tractor trailers would be seen in future what with improvement in highways and infrastructure being in place. There would be an obvious improvement in cost of operations and profitability for fleet owners once this happens.

Apart from Tata, JOST India is in talks with all the truck manufacturers in India and is quite confident of becoming their first choice.
Robust fifth wheel couplings

Fifth wheel couplings will be the focus of the trade show presentations. They have been steadily gaining importance in India over the past years thanks to the changing market tendency towards tractor units. JOST has designed the JSK 36 DV and JSK 38 DV especially for use in challenging conditions. The JSK 36 DV is a robust pressed steel coupling intended for single-handed operation. It combines user-friendly operation with a maximum level of safety and stability. The JSK 36 DV is configured for 2” kingpins and an imposed load of up to 20 tonnes. JOST India has been producing this standard coupling in its own plant in Jamshedpur since 2008.

The JSK 38 DV50 fifth wheel coupling has been designed for tougher conditions with imposed loads of up to 28 tonnes and also offers a specially designed integrated shock absorber unit made of pressure-absorbent rubber. The JSK 38 DV50 is thus particularly well suited for use with heavy loads in challenging road conditions.

Telescopic landing gears for trailers

The trailer segment holds a big promise as well, feels JOST India. Starting from the basic kingpin (which connects the trailer and tractor) to steering systems (a product which helps reduce the turning radius quite significantly), the Indian customers have reposed their faith in JOST world class products. Buoyed by this development, JOST India is offering all the products in the JOST range through their local operations. In short, an Indian customer has access to contemporary European products at affordable prices.

With the type A 400 T and D 200 T telescopic trailer landing gear, JOST proves that robustness and durability go hand in hand with convenience and safety. The premium A 400 telescopic landing gear in particular best meets the requirements of the Indian market with its extremely robust construction and excellent operability. The patented dual level gearing not only allows the landing gears to be raised easily whilst under load – the gearing is also integrated into the supporting leg, protecting it reliably from damage. And yet another advantage: the hermetically sealed gearbox is constantly filled with grease. This ensures that all movable parts move smoothly. At the same time, the grease filling prevents moisture from penetrating.

Operation is as simple as you would expect: the gears can be changed by simply pushing or pulling on the crank. The high gear then enables them to be retracted or extended especially quickly when turning the crank without a load, whereas the low gear enables the loaded trailer to be lifted. It is always ensured that a gear is engaged so as to prevent the legs from lowering of their own accord. Particularly stable inner legs and back plates offer added stability even during side loading.

The D 200 T telescopic landing gear stands out especially due to its compact construction, with a mounting height of only 835 millimetres and a stroke length of up to 480 millimetres. Thanks to the full length back plates, the D 200 T is well-suited for a wide variety of connections and types of assembly.

Multi-purpose safety-towing hitches

Sigma Vibracoustic to set up air springs plant in India

Sigma Vibracoustic India Ltd. (SVIL), a 50:50 joint venture between Vibracoustic of Germany and Sigma (India) Corporation, is setting up a facility in India for manufacturing air springs for trucks and buses. SVIL is investing Euro 1.8 million in setting up the new facility at Mohali (Chandigarh) next to its existing facility where it manufactures vibration control components. The new plant will have a capacity to manufacture 200,000 air springs per annum.

“The new facility for air springs will commence production in the next 6 months. Initially we will import the components and assemble it in India and within the next 12 months we will be indigenising the product”, said Mr J.D. Singh, Chairman of the Sigma Group.

Air suspension as a technology involves replacing mechanical static springs with a dynamic suspension using air filled rubber bellows that provide an active shock absorption (softer or harder depending on terrain) and results in enhanced passenger comfort, easy entry / exit into the vehicle (in case of low floor buses), lower maintenance cost and better noise, vibration and harshness control in the vehicle.

“In India most of the trucks or cars are currently using conventional leaf spring suspension technology, which are less safe and durable and are unable to react according to the highly diversified load conditions as compared to latest active air suspension technology, which provides best combination of safe and comfortable driving as well as help preserve the vehicle as well as the road surface”, Mr. Singh said.

The state-of-the-art air suspensions have been designed keeping in mind the Indian rugged road conditions. Apart from compensating lateral forces, Vibracoustic airsprings, applied in cars, can realize fuel savings by lowering the vehicle at high speeds (reducing wind resistance surface and drag coefficient enabling up to 5 per cent fuel saving), and in case of CVs, adjustment of vehicle height to suit road conditions and increase driving safety (roll) and passenger comfort.

“Sigma Vibracoustic air suspension offers various intelligent options, including adjustment of vehicle height to road conditions and driving comfort through minimized vibrations and shocks. It is currently being used in low-floor buses, and special-purpose trucks and buses in the country. The company plans to target OEMs and after-sales markets in India. Major CV manufacturers, including Tata Motors have already shown keen interest in the product and discussing business opportunities”, Mr. Singh added.

SVIL is currently supplying air springs to Taco Hendrikson by importing air springs from Germany. These air springs go into the suspension for lift axle which is supplied by Taco Hendrickson for Tata’s 3118, 8X2 trucks. The company is also in talks with other air suspension manufacturers like Jamna Auto which has tied up with Ridewell for manufacturing complete systems.

Mercedes-Benz offers next-generation high-tech luxury buses

For the German giant, Mercedes-Benz India Ltd., the Bus Division will be one of the focus area since there is an increasing demand for its luxury coaches.

Outlining the company’s marketing strategy in India, Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India Ltd., said for the bus sales, it will have its focus on the niche market and expects to sell 10-15 units year.

Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai are among the cities in the western and southern regions of the country which will have the company’s special focus. Since the company maintains the No.1 position in respect of reliability and safety, it expects more orders from various State Transport Undertakings (STUs), particularly for two and three-axle buses. While final negotiations for orders from KSRTC are underway, the company buses are undergoing test with other STUs like Rajasthan State Transport Corporation.

Private operators in the western region are also showing keen interest in the company buses, and several orders from them are expected in the current year. The most futuristic Mercedes-Benz buses costing Rs. 85 lakhs each are mostly built against orders.

According to Mr. Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses, the Bus Division earned 4.8 billion Euros in 2008 by selling 40,000 units globally. With 15 per cent market share worldwide, it enjoys market leadership in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, etc.
The company is also one of the prominent suppliers of hybrid buses and has already sold 3,000 units, mostly in the US, and has just introduced them in the European market where it expects to break even in six years’ time.

Mercedes-Benz always believes in a strategy of long-term commitment in order to remain the most efficient bus manufacturer in the world with the clear advantage of making profits even in a highly competitive environment.

India a new market

Though Mercedes-Benz cars are very popular among Indian buyers, its buses are quite new to the country. Being a technology leader, the company has its maximum focus on priority areas like safety, fuel economy, rider comfort, etc. For India, the company will follow a regional rather than a national approach.

Since rapid infrastructural development is taking place in India, the company believes that premium buses will have a future in the country. There will also be greater preference among the public for bus travelling rather than by air or rail owing mainly to affordability.

Launch of 3-axle luxury coach

Keeping all this in mind, Mercedes-Benz has already developed its bus platform specially suited to the Indian requirement. It has launched its much-awaited 3-axle intercity luxury coach which comes with its O 500 RSD 2436 chassis and the body assembled by the Indian partner company Sutlej Motors Ltd.

“The Mercedes-Benz coach incorporates hallmarks of the Mercedes brand: highest standards of safety, comfort and technology, with its advantages like optimized cost of ownership and robust build quality. I am confident our customers in India will appreciate this new offering,” commented Mr. Hartmut Schick.

Dr. Wilfried Aulbur indicated the positioning of the multi-axle buses: “With rapid infrastructure improvement in India, there is a need for mass transit long-distance mobility solutions with adequate comfort and safety for occupants. The Mercedes-Benz coach just introduced will cater to this specific demand for the Indian market. Our 2-axle coach has already received enthusiastic response; the new multi-axle coaches will take it to the next level for our Indian customers.”

The Mercedes-Benz 3-axle coaches embody the brand’s global aspirations, displaying a blend of premium quality, outstanding cost-effectiveness and the very highest safety standards, coupled with a strong service network. In other words, this star performer defines ‘success’ for the coach operators.

The coach, with its bold and inviting windscreen and a beautifully sculpted front face, is visually impressive and distinct in look. The windscreen design with its integration to the body design provides a panoramic view of the road.

Powered by the Euro III engine, the Mercedes-Benz 3-axle coaches are capable of delivering high performance, powerful torque output and a good fuel economy. The rear engine with 6 vertical cylinders, turbo-charged and inter-cooled engine delivers 1200 Nm torque at a low rpm of 1400-1600. The smart suspension system is equipped with a lifting mechanism that allows the chauffeur to lift the height of the coach when the road conditions are bad.

The coach is designed for the highest levels of safety and stability at even high speeds. It comes with ABS that accentuates safety of the vehicle as a whole.

With typical Mercedes attention to detail, the coach designers have also given great attention to the interior of the debutante, ensuring that every feature appeals in both emotional and functional terms with its form, colour or material. The result is a harmonious whole – an atmosphere in which the bus occupants immediately feel safe and protected, and long journeys can be taken without any feeling of effort or stress.
Passenger seats are mounted on a higher level from the aisle and are equipped with a mechanical reclining mechanism. Also, the coach maintains a perfect temperature with a well-developed roof-mounted AC.
